That is the number that Cadillac wishes to highlight when it comes to the Escalade, which is driven by a 6.0-litre V8 engine along with General Motors’ two-mode hybrid system. As a part of the system will be a 300-volt nickel hydride battery that will power the Escalade on as the company tries hard to integrate a classy look with cleaner vehicles and efficient engines. With a price tag well in excess of $85,000, the Escalade will soon be available in the US market. 

The First Monster Truck

 

Monster truck shows are a popular sporting event, often appearing in arenas around the country delighting the young and old alike. Each event features several monster trucks competing in various events like mud races, car jumps and the ever popular car crush. There is even a monster truck called Truckzilla that eats other trucks and spits fire. So how did this all get started? What was the original monster truck? One word: Bigfoot.
Bob Chandler was a construction worker in the St. Louis area back in the 70s. In 1975 he took his Ford F250 and created Bigfoot. His epiphany came when he heard about an idea that was proposed to the Army to give both axles of a truck steering capabilities. Bob tested the idea on his truck and created the worlds first 4x4x4. Bigfoot's large size came from the military axles that Bob equipped with Terra tires that were typically used on farming equipment.

Initially Bob would take his lifted truck out on the weekends to enjoy a little off-roading. He soon discovered that the auto parts stores in town weren't equipped with the parts he needed to continue repairing his 4x4. That's when Bob, along with his wife and friend, opened up a 4x4 parts store in Hazelwood, MO. This location remains as Bigfoot's headquarters.

At first Bigfoot was used as a sort of billboard to promote his parts shop. In 1979 Bob introduced Bigfoot to the world when he appeared in a truck and tractor pull in Denver to show off his truck and promote his store. Bigfoot grew rapidly in popularity and Bob continued to appear in truck and tractor pulls. But things really took off when Bob performed what is believed to be the first car crush in history.

The car crush started out as a joke when Bob got permission from a local farmer to film himself crushing two cars in the man's field. He would show the film in his shop and that's when a local motor sports event promoter happened in and saw the video. He requested Bigfoot to perform the stunt in front of a crowd and after some hesitation Bob agreed. After that event Bigfoot's popularity skyrocketed and a second truck had to be built to keep up with demand.

It wasn't long before Bigfoot began receiving sponsorships and people around the country began imitating the monster truck by building their own and attempting to make them bigger and bigger. Ford started sponsoring Bigfoot in 1983 and continued to do so until 2007. Chevy picked up the sponsorship soon after Ford dropped it and that prompted Bob to make Bigfoot a lifted Chevy instead of a lifted Ford for the first time in Bigfoot's history.

Nissan introduced the compact pickup to the North American automotive world nearly forty years ago, when the company sold vehicles under the Datsun name. More than the name is new. An improved engine provides more power and a sturdier, more rigid ladder frame is found underneath the slightly larger, restyled body. But the Frontier is true to its heritage, an unpretentious vehicle designed for the hard-working, hard-playing compact truck buyer. 

Three trim levels are being offered, Standard, XE, and SE. Versions of each are targeted at specific segments of the compact truck market. Cost-sensitive buyers have the standard model, available in 4x2 regular cab form only. The top-of-the-line SE comes in 4x2 or 4x4 King Cab style. The XE is expected to be the high-volume model, and can be had with either cab and a choice of 2- or 4-wheel drive. 

Press fleet vehicles always seem to be top of the line, and the Frontier SE 4x4 that I had recently was no exception. Still, "top of the line" is a relative term. The Frontier has no luxury car pretensions, it's just an honest truck. Even though the SE King Cab 4x4 has enough of the right features for comfort, convenience, and utility, it's made for truck work: hauling, towing, and just plain work. 

APPEARANCE: The Nissan Frontier has new style to go with its new name. It is slightly larger than the old Nissan truck, and gently rounded at the edges and corners. It has contemporary looks without going over the "aerodynamic look" edge. A flat, sloping front panel contains a chromed grille flanked by simple rectangular headlights. Character lines on the hood and sides prevent slabbiness and add interest and strength. The SE 4-by-4 King Cab is a well-proportioned small pickup with a rugged look thanks to its high stance, black fender flares, chrome-trimmed bumpers, and alloy wheels. 

COMFORT: Inside is where the Frontier is most noticeably improved. Although the amount of cabin space is about the same as in the previous generation, the Frontier utilizes it better and is much more civilized. Noise, vibration, and harshness reduction was a successful design goal. A new, contemporarily-styled instrument panel places instruments and controls well, especially for the climate control and sound systems. Seating arrangement and materials depend on trim level. The SE 4x4 King Cab has good cloth-upholstered bucket seats in front and two folding, side-facing rear jump seats. Power windows, mirrors, and door locks with remote keyless entry are standard on the SE, as are a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, air conditioning, and a 100- watt AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo. There are plenty of cupholders and storage spaces around the cab. A long, floor-mounted gearshift lever and four-wheel drive lever let the driver know that it is undeniably a truck. The cargo bed has double wall construction so interior dents don't show outside. It also has built-in partition slots to allow two-tier loading or horizontal partitioning for extra versatility. 

SAFETY: Every 1998 Nissan Frontier has dual airbags with a shutoff switch for the passenger-side bag, a front crumple zone, and side door beams. Two wheel drive models have antilock rear brakes. 4x4s have a sophisticated 4-wheel antilock system. 

ROADABILITY: The Frontier rides and handles like a modern pickup. It's not as soft and quiet as a family sedan, but it's no Conestoga wagon. Steering effort is light, and the 4-wheel antilock brakes of the 4x4 models ensure good stopping ability on all surfaces. Even the base rear-wheel drive Frontier has rear antilock brakes, important especially when the cargo bed is not loaded. Nine inches of ground clearance on the 4x4 Frontier and seven on 4x2 models make either a good choice for off-road use or urban pothole-dodging. 

PERFORMANCE: All Frontier models have a 4-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine that has been significantly revised for smoother, quieter operation, lower emissions levels, and improved low-rpm torque. With 143 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque, it is one of the most powerful 4-cylinder compact truck engines. However, in 4-wheel drive King Cab form, a 3700 lb. curb weight means that acceleration is acceptable but on the leisurely side. No apologies necessary, this is a working truck, not a sports car. It is undoubtedly far quicker than a 37- horsepower Datsun 1000, and holds much more than 500 lbs. In fact, towing and payload capacities are the Frontier's high-performance parameters, with 3500 and 1400 lbs. respectively. More power offered by the system allows greater eAssist gears to improve efficiency without compromising the steady state acceleration and driveability. The system's ability to offer some help to cruising speed electric, the driver can accelerate gently, or get a slight degree without downshifting the transmission.

Additional electric pump oil is added to the 6T40 transmission, which keeps the transfer of fluid and flows triggered when the engine is shut off at stops. That keeps the transmission ready to run when the driver accelerates, seamless, no-compromise driving experience.

Buick Regal GS 2012 Review

Revealed the production version of the Buick Regal GS 2012, the expression of even sportier Regal sport sedan went on sale earlier this year and has attracted new buyers to the family Buick.

Powered by a high-performance Ecotec 2.0L turbo mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the GS offers an estimated 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque for a 0-60 mph performance in less than seven seconds (estimated). Buick interactive control of transmission is standard on the GS, allowing drivers to tailor the driving experience by changing the suspension settings and steering sensitivity between the three modes: normal, sport and GS.

"Built on the foundations of the performance of the Regal, the Regal GS is designed and the performance of an expression even more athletic and reactive style," said John Schwegman, vice president of marketing at Buick. "The driving experience is powerful and strong, and the GS is the next entry in the revival of Buick product."

The Regal GS will be announced tonight at a consumer event in Miami. Will be available in the second half of 2011. Pricing has not yet been announced.

The exterior features a unique front and rear fascias, a front fascia includes a strong, vertical slot air inlet, specific grille treatment - vertical elements accented satin silver metallic. The rear fascia has a pair of integrated metallic satin trapezoidal tailpipes. Rocker extensions, and integrated rear spoiler also woven into the design. Power Regal GS comes with a high-performance version of the Ecotec 2.0L VVT DOHC turbocharged engine with direct injection technology. It is based on the engine, which is available in the CXL Regal later this year, but the engine and the turbocharger is calibrated to produce more boost pressure and GS. Direct injection technology helps the engine produce more power from increasing efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and emissions. That means less fuel consumption and emissions generated - including a drop of 25 percent cold start hydrocarbon emissions. Variable valve timing to optimize power, efficiency and emissions throughout the rpm band.

"There are a combination of direct injection and variable valve timing engine with an increase since 2006, and there is no doubt the Regal GS turbo and throttle response and the 3.5l V6 engine, while offering the fuel economy 2.0-liter four, "said Mike Anderson, chief engineer, Ecotec global program manager.

The engine is mated to the standard six-speed manual gearbox. A six-speed automatic is available in the future.

Regal GS ride on a relatively long wheelbase of 107.8 inches (2738 millimeters), which offers a sophisticated and well-balanced vehicle dynamics. It also includes four-wheel independent suspension, which is unique in the High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut) suspension design of the front. HiPerStrut system helps reduce engine torque and maintain a negative camber when cornering, the driver experiences reduced torque drive, better traction and greater power curve with the sharper handling, steering precision and feedback.

A four-link independent rear suspension has been designed to minimize the side effects of camber and toe driving Spirited movement to improve vehicle stability. Front and rear shock absorbers incorporate Computer Active Damping Control (CDC), continuously variable damper properties of optimal control of the vehicle in a variety of road surfaces and profiles. Damping more aggressive and goal-oriented can also be selected through the interactive driver driving control.

Stopping power comes from a large-diameter four-wheel disc brake system Brembo front calipers. The Regal GS is equipped with Drive Control System (IDCS Interactive) technology chassis (also available in other models with Regal turbocharged 2.0 L). It provides improved vehicle stability and greater driving safety. The driver can choose between three operating modes - standard, sport and GS - to change the suspension settings and steering response through the system variable effort steering.

A module of advanced driving control mode continuously monitors yaw rate of driving style harness, lateral and longitudinal acceleration speed, steering wheel, accelerator and the vehicle. It defines the dynamic state of the vehicle, including acceleration, braking and cornering, to optimize the reactions of the chassis. It also performs all driver-selectable IDCS. All four dampers are electronically controlled and continuously adapt within a few milliseconds to traffic conditions, vehicle movements and individual driving style.

SG selection optimizes the car for driving dynamics, tightening the suspension and steering. "Standard" or default, is the setting for all uses. Sport mode offers a level of performance between the standard and GS modes.
